European BEST Engineering Competition

Purpose of EBEC Project
European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC) is one of the core activities of BEST, which gives students the opportunity to use their theoretical knowledge gained during the University, by being challenged to solve interdisciplinary tasks, since this project is under the core activity of BEST: providing complementary education.

Every year more than 6000 students from all over Europe compete in more than 80 local rounds of the European BEST Engineering Competition.
EBEC consists of 3 rounds: Local, National and European.
Teams of 4 students compete in 2 categories: Case Study and Team Design. The team which proves to be the most efficient, creative and successful at the end of the EBEC finals is granted by “BEST Engineers of Europe” title.

Team design

The teams have to build a prototype, which gives a solution to an engineering problem that is connected to a company or real-world problem. They work within limited time, with certain amount of simple parts and a limited budget they can use to buy more parts.
It is possible, though, to increase the budget with small case studies and mini-games. After the introduction of the task the teams will have 4-5 hours to prepare a concept, a prototype and a presentation to demonstrate that device meets all the requirements.

Case Study

Participants face a realistic case which could actually be a real company problem of either technical nature or related to management that has to be solved in a theoretical way. Solving this task requires analytical skills as well as gathering, filtering and analyzing information. After 6-7 hours of work students present their hypothetical solutions of the given problem to the judges.

1. Local round

The first round, EBEC Local, is organised by the Local BEST Group of each university.
Participation is open to all students of the institution, regardless of school and year of studies. Participants compete in the two tests Case Study and Team Design. The aim is to get the best solution to the proposed problem (technical and economic feasibility).
The winners of both categories proceed further and meet with other local winners in the second round (regional/national).

2. National round

The winners of the Local Round will compete with the winners of the following Greek universities:
National Technical University of Athens
Technical University of Crete
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
in the National EBEC Round, the second level of EBEC project, in order to prove their technical and teamwork skills and participate in the Final Round.

3. Final round

The last round of EBEC competition, EBEC Final takes place in August. It gathers 120 competitors from all over Europe and lasts 9 days, 4 of which are the working days where participants will be practicing engineering approaches that they learned in their studies, under limited amount of time, material and external access. The other ones are dedicated for other different topics, such as company day, cultural visit and social activities.
